The Town of Cheverly, Maryland, was established in 1931 as a planned residential community just east of Washington, D.C. Developed during the suburban expansion between the World Wars, Cheverly was designed to offer a small-town atmosphere with convenient access to the nation’s capital. Early growth centered around its tree-lined streets, neighborhood parks, and a strong civic focus that encouraged community involvement.
Following World War II, the town expanded as returning veterans and federal employees sought housing near Washington. Cheverly incorporated municipal services and developed its own police department, public works operations, and community facilities to support residents. The arrival of the Cheverly Metro Station in 1978 further strengthened its connection to the region and supported steady residential growth.
Today, Cheverly remains a close-knit community known for its civic pride, green spaces, and active local government. Its proximity to Washington, D.C., combined with a strong sense of neighborhood identity, continues to make it an attractive place to live and work.
